Director Research Operations – Core Flow
We are seeking a dynamic Director with extensive experience in advanced flow cytometry and cell sorting to lead the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource. Our world-class facility boasts 10 full-time staff positions, 8 cell sorters, and 12 flow analyzers, featuring top instruments such as BD Biosciences Aria, Fusion, LSR Fortessa, Symphony A3, A5, A5-SE, Cytek Aurora, and ThermoFisher BigFoot. The Flow Shared Resource offers a wide array of services, including standard and highly complex flow analysis, conventional and spectral cell sorting, diverse sample preparation methods, complex data analysis and interpretation, and training for staff in analyzer and sorter operations, as well as self-service analysis capabilities. In this role, you will lead a team of flow cytometry specialists supporting research across 100 laboratories at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. You will establish clear roles for staff that foster engagement and enable career growth. Staying up-to-date on the latest flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies and applications will be crucial to maintaining our facility's cutting-edge status. Effective communication with investigators, staff, and project stakeholders will be essential, as you implement systems for quality assessment, consistency, and innovation. Additionally, you will collaborate with faculty and research staff on project management, design, technical requirements, and execution within the Flow Shared Resource. Oversight of operational quality, service delivery, budgeting, and strategic recommendations for equipment upgrades and expansion will also be part of your responsibilities. The ideal candidate will possess strong management and leadership skills, exceptional communication abilities, and experience in change management. Responsibilities
• Manages day-to-day activities of Flow Shared Resource and its staff.
o Maintains high level of proficiency in current and evolving technologies relevant to Flow Shared Resource goals, including Spectral Flow techniques and analysis.
o Keeps up to date with emerging technology applicable to the Flow Shared Resource and ensures it is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.
o Oversees new equipment testing, demonstration, and acquisition.
o Analyzes workflow and determines, recommends, and oversees the implementation of methods to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of operations.
• Supervises laboratory staff.
o Ensures that all Flow Shared Resource employees are knowledgeable in current technologies and skills.
o Obtains feedback on and evaluates performance of Flow Shared Resource employees.
o Counsels and disciplines employees. Seeks advice/consent of supervisor as needed.
o Interviews and makes decisions when hiring new employees.
o Conducts and promotes staff continuing education and development through attending and presenting seminars and training sessions, reading articles, and managing special projects.
• Supervises performance of laboratory activities.
o Advises and interacts with faculty and other research staff on the management, design, and technical needs of projects serviced by the Flow Shared Resource.
o Ensures accuracy, reproducibility, and timeliness of results.
o Reviews problems in reagent and instrument quality control.
o Serves as a resource for troubleshooting laboratory problems.
o Reviews and ensures cost recovery through chargebacks in compliance with established institutional guidelines.
o Responsibly manages capital resources and will prepare reports in collaboration with the Associate Director of the Shared Resources for the Cancer Center.
o Monitors quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and quality management (QM) of activities and resolves any deficiencies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
• Attends department/ institute-specific program meetings and retreats to ensure members are well informed about services offered and learn the needs of members across the institution.
• Maintains regular and predictable attendance. Minimum Education:
• Bachelor's degree is required Minimum Experience:
• Ten (10) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required
• Eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree
• Six (6) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD
